Definition
LangChain's observability and evaluation platform. Provides traces, prompt management, datasets, and automated evaluation for LLM applications. LangSmith tells you what your agents did — it shows traces, latency, token usage, and tool call sequences. It does NOT prevent harmful actions or govern tool execution.
Why It Matters
Observability creates visibility. Governance creates enforcement. LangSmith is a powerful observability tool, but seeing a trace log of a database deletion doesn't undo the deletion. Most AI teams invest heavily in observability and assume it provides governance. It doesn't.
